Ukraine’s accession to NATO: Duda is firmly ‘in favor,’ Scholz and Macron also, but less categorically

Polish President Andrzej Duda, during a meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron, expressed the strongest support for Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.

This was reported by the German Tagesschau.

At the meeting of the leaders of the countries of the ‘Weimar Triangle’ on June 12 in Paris, the accession of Ukraine to NATO was discussed.

The publication reports that France and Germany consider it better to exercise ‘caution’ on this matter and discuss the topic of security guarantees at the Alliance’s summit in July, while Poland declared resolute support for Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance.

Duda said that ‘Ukraine is waiting for a clear signal, a clear perspective of accession,’ and expressed hope that the NATO summit in Vilnius will show ‘light at the end of this tunnel’.

According to Scholz, it is necessary to continue ‘preparing for such a step’ and to do it ‘very intensively.’ At the same time, regarding security guarantees for Ukraine, he stated that they are needed in a ‘very concrete form’.

Macron asserts that NATO will provide Ukraine with any support ‘to which it is entitled’ and that the upcoming European Council meeting and NATO summit in Vilnius will be dedicated to the ‘future of collective security’ in Europe.

As reported by Deutsche Welle, on July 12, prior to the meeting, Scholz stated that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin ‘must realize that his plan has failed and immediately cease the war in Ukraine.’ The Chancellor emphasized that the Kremlin must ‘withdraw troops and finally start talking about a just peace.
