Russia must compensate Ukraine for the war damages, which currently amount to $486 billion, according to the G7 statement

Russia must end its illegal aggressive war and pay for the damages it has caused Ukraine, which, according to the World Bank, amount to over $486 billion. This was stated in the communiqué of the G7 countries following their summit in Italy.

The leaders also emphasized that Russian sovereign assets in their jurisdictions will remain frozen.

“It is not right for Russia to decide whether and when it will pay for the damages caused to Ukraine. Russia’s obligations under international law to compensate for the harm it has caused are clear, and therefore we continue to explore all possible legal avenues to compel Russia to fulfill these obligations,” the statement said.

The G7 countries assured that they are determined to dispel any misconceptions that time is on Moscow’s side, that the destruction of infrastructure and livelihoods has no consequences, or that Russia can win by causing an economic collapse in Ukraine.

Moreover, they stated that they will continue to provide Ukraine with military, humanitarian, and budgetary support for as long as necessary.
