Borrell announced the possible accession of 10 new countries to the EU
According to the head of EU foreign policy, the war in Ukraine has become one of the catalysts for accelerating EU expansion.
“Ukraine is to become an EU member, as are the Western Balkans, and quickly,” said Borrell. Josep Borrell stated that the EU should be prepared for the possibility that ten new countries may join its ranks. However, he did not specify which countries he was referring to.
“We also need to prepare for an expansion that could lead to the addition of ten new members,” journalists quote Borrell. The Spanish politician also emphasized that only candidates who meet the relevant requirements can join the European Union.
Borrell calls on the EU to prepare even more soldiers for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
The European diplomat highlights that the mission has already trained 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers. “We will reach the planned target of 30,000 servicemen by the end of October… And I proposed to the ministers to raise the mission’s target to 40,000 servicemen by the end of the year,” said Josep Borrell.
According to him, the heads of defense ministries of EU countries have already discussed the possibility of increasing the target figure for their training mission for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, EUMAM, as the previous targets will be achieved by the end of October. Furthermore, it is emphasized that Josep Borrell reminded of the decision by the Netherlands and Denmark to commence training for Ukrainian pilots and support personnel on modern F-16 fighter aircraft.
