Terrorists from the Wagner group, during a recent “military coup,” managed to breach the Voronezh-45 nuclear base in an attempt to seize small nuclear devices. This information was reported by Kirill Budanov, the Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, in an interview with Reuters.
According to him, the Wagner members reached the nuclear base to raise the stakes in their uprising.
“Because if you’re ready to fight to the last person, this is one of the objects that significantly raises the stakes,” Budanov said.
He noted that the only barrier turned out to be the doors to the nuclear weapons storage, which were locked, and the terrorists couldn’t access the technical area.
The Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate stated that Voronezh-45 houses small nuclear devices that can be carried in a backpack.
“This was one of the key storage locations for these backpacks,” summarized the intelligence officer.
One of the Kremlin-linked sources close to Reuters, with connections to the military, partially confirmed Budanov’s words, stating that the fighters of Yevgeny Prigozhin were able to access the “zone of special interest.”
